The Good Stuff: Nina Sits Down with the Owner of Type A Deodorant

Type A Deodorant review

As you all know by now, I am always trying to make safer choices for myself and my family whenever possible. But let’s be honest, these switches have to be easy and they have to work.

In my quest to find a safer, healthier deodorant, I have tried several different ones. This is tricky because I work out every single day, which means the deodorant I use has to stand up to my workouts. While I have had moderate success with some of these safer brands, I have not been 100% satisfied. And as we wait for Beautycounter to launch a safe deodorant (we hope soon), I have finally found a new option that I love, and it’s working great for me! Plus, it does NOT stain my clothes.

Meet Type A Deodorant!

I was so excited that I asked Allison Moss, the owner & founder of the company, to sit down with me and tell me all about her journey to invent this amazing, safe deodorant that we can all enjoy, knowing it is a healthier option that actually works.  She said YES to chatting with me!

Allison lives in Santa Monica, CA with her supportive, entrepreneurial-minded husband and their two young kids (one boy and one girl). Allison has had a career in the beauty industry, so this space is a familiar territory for her. She was making safer choices already, but one place where she was not pleased with the performance was her deodorant.

Allison started trying dozens of natural deodorants with mediocre experience. “I thought, what is going on here and what can be done differently? I realized I knew how to do this better. There was room for improvement. It certainly was a leap of faith,” she said. And that leap of faith led her on this journey.

You know me, the former TV journalist, always has a lot of questions. (Sorry, Allison!)

Question: From start to finish, how long did it take her?
Answer: “A year and a half!!” Yup, that’s it. Pretty amazing, right? From the start of her idea to the day it was made available to purchase, 18 months is quite a feat. I’m impressed.

Type A deodorantType A is made with ingredients that pass my personal high bar when it comes to safety. Type A’s formula is a cream that comes in a tube, but wipes on like a stick. What a cool concept! And it has a sweat-activated technology (patent pending) for long-lasting protection. The tube is easy to use, and there are currently two options available: the Minimalist (unscented) and the Visionary (a gender neutral herbal citrus scent).

Question: What’s behind the name, Type A deodorant?
Answer: “It is about the credibility, the integrity, the performance of the brand, and the intention of the brand. We pay attention to detail.” This Type A gal (me) approves! Another coincidence of the name is in the letter A, which coincides with the first letter of Allison’s name. (She and I shared a laugh—how fun is that!)

Question: Why should consumers consider a safer deodorant?
Answer: “It’s about making safer choices when you can. There is enough evidence that shows many ingredients in main stream deodorants (mainly aluminum) are either questionable, or are known to be harmful to our health. I feel that if we can offer a healthier alternative that actually works, then we have made that one healthier choice a no brainer.” BRAVO, Allison. Clean beauty babes rejoice!

Question: What is the mindset of the company and the people who are working there?
Answer: “Scrappy start-up,” she said. They’re all working out of a WeWork office in LA. (My favorite type of office.) “We are trying to be as lean and mean as we can.”

Question: What’s next?
Answer: Type A will soon be available in Credo Beauty stores. Allison says they’re also working on a couple more scents coming soon. Stay tuned! And for 2019, a significant retail expansion. I can’t wait! But in the meantime, you can purchase the deodorant right here.  Use the promo code CLEANBEAUTY to save 10% off your order (and if you spend $25 or more, shipping is automatically free as well!). Be sure to add the code at checkout.

Final thoughts from Allison: “Our mission is to offer a healthier deodorant accessible to the most amount of people.” And that my friends, is the real deal.

This deodorant is now a new clean beauty favorite in our house. Well done, Allison!
