Making Healthy Changes: Toss the Non-Stick Pots and Pans at Home

dangers of teflon

Since we recently moved to a new house, I thought it would be a good time for us to re-think what cookware we are using in our kitchen.  I am trying to be more aware of what toxic chemicals are being used in my household.  You’re probably thinking what’s not to love about non-stick cookware? It’s easy to clean and cook on, plus it seems that it doesn’t darken or blacken as fast as other cookware does. But did you know that when pots and pans made with Teflon are heated above 350 ºC (662 ºF), the primary chemical in Teflon, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), “begins to degrade, releasing fine particles and a variety of gaseous compounds that can cause damage to the lungs when inhaled“?

According to recent studies, these toxins are accumulating in human blood dangerously fast, and the problem is that they are leading to chronic disease over time.

You become exposed to Teflon fumes after heating a pan via inhalation, causing flu like symptoms known as polymer fume fever. DuPont, the guys who created Teflon, dismiss it as a mild condition (of course they would). However, fever isn’t the only concern. A study found that PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate, used in the process of making Teflon), increased the possibility of infertility anywhere from 70 to 134 percent, while PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid, also used to make Teflon) increased the possibility of infertility from 60 to 154 percent.

Research also show how PFOA can cause thyroid disease. The Environmental Working Group’s report also provides evidence that it can cause immune system problems, hypothyroidism, and organ damage.
cast iron cookwareSo if you haven’t ditched your non-stick pots and pans yet, I hope you do now. If you’re cast ironlooking for safe alternatives, I recommend cast iron cookware, it is extremely durable and offers even heat distribution. You can use on the stovetop or in the oven, and doesn’t requires any detergent to clean it. It’s a winner!! I am currently making the switch gradually since this is not a cheap switch. Look for deals like at your favorite kitchen store, to make these small changes! You’ll be glad you did.  🙂

Keep in mind, your Teflon pots and pans are not the only ones that contain perfluorooctane compounds (PFCs). Others include stain-proof clothing, microwave popcorn, stain-hesitant carpets, packaging for greasy foods, carpet and fabric stain protectors, and flame retardants. So if you plan on ditching the cookware, make sure to ditch these as well. Here’s to our health! xoxo
