Mixing it up for Family Vacay

Clarke family vacay Charleston

Charleston is best known for the amazing history, the charm, the architecture, the people…but it’s also known for all the amazing FOOD. If you’re heading to Charleston, get ready to eat and get ready to walk (Seriously, just bring cute sneakers and wear them day and night.) We usually go to Florida for spring break, but this year we decided to mix it up and go somewhere that our kids have never been before. I highly recommend trying a new destination on your next vacation.

Charleston Grocery

Here are some of our favorite dining spots in Charleston, in no particular order:

  • Leon’s Oyster Shop
  • Magnolia’s
  • Slightly North of Broad (S.N.O.B.)
  • The Grocery
  • Le Farfalle
  • High Cotton
  • Virginia’s On King
  • Kaminsky’s (for the best desserts)
  • Miller’s All Day
Sullivan's Island

We also took a short car ride to Sullivan’s Island to explore the beautiful beaches and the delicious food there. (See, it’s always about the food!)

Best places to eat in Charleston

Our suggestions on Sullivan’s Island:

  • The Obstinate Daughter
  • Poe’s Tavern
  • HomeTown BBQ
  • The Co-Op (for its famous frosé)

We also explored Fort Moultrie there for a little U.S. history. Speaking of history, our son Charlie is a history buff, and he suggested we visit Fort Sumter. This is so worth it. You take a 30-minute boat ride out to Fort Sumter, which makes it even more memorable. Fort Sumter is where the Civil War began in April 1861. We learned so much on this excursion.

Charleston Bike Taxi

We also recommend taking a Ghost Tour, a carriage ride tour, and our favorite way to get around when we weren’t walking everywhere was taking the bike taxis. The kids loved them!

Definitely don’t miss all the great shopping on King Street. One hidden gem was the coolest record store on King Street called Record Stop. We could’ve spent 5 hours there.

kids

We let our kids pick some things they wanted to do, and I think that is why they enjoyed this new destination so much. That is my one big takeaway to share with fellow parents. Maybe you’re like us, and you usually forget to ask for their input. They always have great ideas, maybe that means they’re growing up, which I struggle with as their mom! 🙂
