Let’s All Make Reading Books Cool Again

reading books

Not sure what’s gotten in to me—it must be the new year. Instead of goals and resolutions, I’m putting out my intentions and making a few small changes. Big goals and big resolutions are overwhelming me, so instead I am just starting with some small tweaks to my daily life. One of these tweaks involves reading more books this year.

Maybe I am inspired by Oprah’s amazing speech at the Golden Globes, and how fabulous Oprah’s Book Club used to be. I love her!

Maybe I am inspired by my son’s love of reading and enormous hoarding of books in his room.

Maybe I am inspired by my daughter’s enthusiastic journey to learn how to read in the first grade.

Maybe I am inspired by seeing too many of us reading our phones (yours truly included in this!).

Maybe I am inspired by one of my best friend’s fabulous new book called “Classic Style” (love you Kate Schelter, and your friendship ❤️).

Maybe I am inspired by ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Doesn’t it seem cool to walk by someone reading a book instead of reading their iPhone? I think so! 🙂

I am committed to making small tweaks in my intentions for the new year. Nothing too big or too drastic because if I did that, we all know I’d never stick to them. So, one of my small tweaks is reading a real book for ten minutes every night before bed. Yes that’s right, ten minutes. For me, that’s ten more minutes than what I’ve been doing. This is manageable and very reasonable for my daily routine. Maybe I’ll even sleep better at night, too!

Kids reading booksIt’s been a week so far, and guess what? I actually finished a book I’ve been reading for six months, and I’m already well into my next book. I think putting down our phones more for a book is a better choice. Most importantly, I want to show that I love books for my kids’ sake. If all they ever see me reading is my iPhone or an occasional “US Weekly”, what message am I sending to them? I want to do better even if it’s just for ten minutes. Small changes can make a big impact!

Happy reading, and please share your favorite books with me so I have some good options for 2018!

xoxo NBC
