It seems we have fast tracked into summer with sunny and hot days already here.
Since I am a skin cancer gal, I am NOT able to lay out in the sun or get any color from the sun. Basically the sun hates me. But the problem is I love having color and getting a “tan” or a summer glow. The good news is I can get that whole look from some of my go-to’s from Beautycounter. Here is my triple threat for a faux glow: Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer, Glow Shimmer Oil and Color Contour Matte Bronzer.
Are you looking to make some healthier decisions in the new year? Simple, healthy switches are important, and if you haven’t started yet, now is the perfect time! The new year gives all of us a chance to start fresh and new. And if I can do this, so can you!
Progress not perfection is my mantra. Making small changes in your house can make a big difference when it comes to how many toxic chemicals are coming into your home.
Have you been hearing all the latest buzz about beets? Those small, red, earthy and sweet vegetables seem to be everywhere. And it’s no surprise so many use it to make beet juice or beet salad (or even lip balm!), given its many benefits—from boosting the immune system with vitamin C and minerals, to supplying the body with fiber, manganese and B vitamin folate, which helps reduce the risk of birth defects. And that’s not all, beets have amazing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, detoxification and energy-boosting benefits as well!
We are now in a heat wave here in the Northeast. Other parts of the country are experiencing this scorcher as well, and for many it can be dangerous. The best way to protect yourself in a heat wave (besides applying sunscreen) is to hydrate hydrate hydrate!
Are you familiar with the 8×8 rule? It’s a an easy way to remember, on average, how much water you should drink in a day. Experts recommend drinking eight 8-ounce glasses a day, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. However, some people may need to hydrate themselves more than others, depending on their gender, age, weight, urine color (yes, urine color) activity level and the temperature outside. A great way to calculate how much you need to drink is by checking out this awesome hydration calculator. Try it! It’s quite interesting—everyone is different!
I love finding beauty products that are safe and effective! One of my favorites is the PiperWai Natural Deodorant. Two rockstar women invented this natural deodorant, killed it on the hit TV show Shark Tank, and the rest is history.
While I wait for Beautycounter to release a deodorant (a girl can dream, right?), I had to search for something safe and healthy that stood up to my fitness routines. Since I’m a fitness junkie, I sweat A LOT all the time! After a 50 minute spin class, PiperWai was the only deodorant that didn’t make me stink. I am hooked! Plus, it smells great, a hint of mint and citrus gives it a very spa-fresh scent. Best I’ve ever had, and I have tried many other brands.
Do you know what’s in your shampoo?
Most shampoos you find on the store shelves contain potentially harmful chemicals like surfactants that can cause skin irritations and allergies. They can also be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, which is a known carcinogen. But it doesn’t stop there. Back in 2014, the Center for Environmental Health conducted a study and found 98 shampoos and soaps that were made with a carcinogen called cocamide diethanolamine (cocamide DEA), which was banned in California. Although manufacturers faced a huge lawsuit, only a handful have made changes to remove it from their products.
We all know that keeping fit and eating healthy in your 40s and beyond is harder than when we were in our 20s and maybe even 30s. Sometimes, it’s not until we reach our 40s that we start to realize the importance of health, especially in terms of the foods that go into our bodies and get absorbed into our systems. We become even more conscious than before, because let’s face it—we have family plus kids we want to be there for, for as long as possible.
You know that saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well the same can be applied to avocados! My favorite superfood is the avocado, which is full of nutrients and health benefits for any age.
I recently learned from health and wellness genius, Dr. Frank Lipman, that we should all eat one avocado every day. I am hooked! If you’re looking for a food loaded with good fats, will keep you feeling fuller longer, and want something solid to help with weight-loss, I highly recommend avocados, and here’s why.
Does your little one have rashes? Dry, sensitive skin or eczema? If so, you might be scrambling around for that cream you use for yourself, right? Well stop there! Did you know your child is more susceptible to the effects of chemicals their bodies absorb than adults? If you’re about to reach for that bottle of Fruits & Passion, Babygantics, or maybe even Johnson & Johnson, then you might want to put it down.
There are many kids products out there made by well-known brands (a few I mentioned above) that unfortunately are made with petroleum-derived petrolatum, which may be contaminated with toxic chemicals like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PHA’s can cause harmful effects on the skin, body fluids, and ability to fight disease after short-term and long-term exposure.
