Ready for a Clean Swap

switching to safer products

Are you ready to make a clean swap?

My initial thought was to update the Healthy Switches blog I wrote a year ago, but because I have learned a lot in the past year—and have started using some other clean, safe products in our house—I decided to write a whole new post about what I’ve learned. This is a journey, and I am constantly discovering as I go!

A piece of information that has come to my attention is that one of the most important products to consider switching to safer in your home is LAUNDRY DETERGENT.

Why is that? Because everyone in the entire house is impacted by the laundry detergent—it touches everyone’s clothing. Many conventional laundry detergents are loaded with chemicals that haven’t been tested. We don’t know how our bodies will be affected by long term exposure to these chemicals.

Side note: Be sure to download the “Healthy Living” app from the Environmental Working Group. This is a free app that will rate or score all the products in your home for health and safety. I use this app often, and I highly recommend you use it too. (Remember, it’s FREE!) Arm yourself with information to make switching to safer an easier process. It’s all about progress not perfection. 🙂

Ok, so back to laundry. This is what I have found:

BioKleen detergent safe beauty productsSeventh Generation laundry detergents score well, but the powder detergents receive a top rating. The liquid ones get lower scores, so be sure to check that out on EWG. My problem here is that I prefer liquid over powder for my laundry duties. However, I have recently discovered two other brands that receive high safety ratings. One is Molly’s Suds, a company founded by a pediatric nurse and mother. Her products are made with NO carcinogens, synthetic fragrances, or dyes. The other brand is called BioKleen. This is a family-owned company with plant-based products. We’ve been using the citrus essence liquid detergent, which has the top safety rating from EWG.

Native deodorant safe beauty productsFor deodorant, I still use PiperWai, but I have found another brand that I also now love called Native. It’s good to have some options when it comes to deodorant, until Beautycounter launches its own deodorant line (coming soon, wink wink).

ZOYA Safe nail polish for kidsFor nail polish, I have discovered two more brands that are safer and non-toxic. A shout-out to my favorite nail salon here in Connecticut for carrying two new brands in the salon now: ZOYA and Deborah Lippmann. They are both good options. I also found a kid-friendly brand called Ella + Mila for my daughter. (Let’s hear it for healthy, clean manis + pedis!)

I hope this information helps you & your family make some clean swaps. Thank you so much for reading this blog post! Please share what you’re learning about switching to safer, and any safer brands that you are loving too. We are better together!

xoxo NBC
